Having your first foal is an exciting time. Bringing up foals is a fun learning experience. Though we have yet been through this experience, we were recommended to add these books to our librabry so we will be prepared when our time comes. We are passing this advice on to you!

The Formative Years: Raising and Training the Young Horse from Birth to Two Years

Classic information on working with young horses
This book contains no fads, no gimmicks, no buzz words, no hype. It gave me straighforward classic horse training information that I could understand and put to use. I've used it on my last 3 Warmblood foal crops and the foals and yearlings are confident, respectful, easy to handle and look forward to their work. I also found the chapter on Evaluating Potential of a young horse particularly interesting and useful.

In Bringing Up Baby, Lyons, known for his conditioned-response training methods, offers advice for gently teaching the young horse to respect humans and accept haltering, leading, bathing, trailer loading, and other equine basics. Lyons divides the book into 20 lessons, each building on the animal's previous experience. The outlined steps are clear, descriptive, and well illustrated with outstanding color photos. Fine safety guidelines for preventing injury to both humans and horses are included. An excellent guide for neophytes as well as experienced horsepeople, this work can easily be used to retrain older animals with less than perfect manners as well. Welcome addition to collections serving horse lovers. Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL

This book contains Dr. Miller's theories and techniques, including step-by-step procedures involving bonding, habituation and sensitization. He discusses how to properly handle the mare before, during and after imprinting. There are subsequent sessions detailing how to tie and halter-break the foal, and the added bonus of teaching performance basics that ultimately aid in under-saddle training. Dr. Miller also addresses problems and their prevention, plus the handling of special cases, such as race horses and mules.
